1 Covalent Bonds

2 Let’s Recall! Ionic compounds - A bond is formed through an electron transfer between a metal and a non-metal.

3 Molecular compounds form when two non-metals share outer electrons.
This bond is known as a covalent bond

5 Dogs Teach Chemistry

6 Diatomic Molecule Is a molecule that consists of two atoms joined together with a covalent bond. Can be between the same or different atoms (EX) H2, F2, HF

7

8 Covalent Compounds - naming

9 Naming – molecular compounds
For molecular compounds, prefixes are used to specify the number of atoms. (Ex) Dinitrogenpentoxide Two (= di) nitrogen atoms Five (=pent) oxygen atoms N2O5

10 Prefix Number of atoms Examples mon(o)- 1 carbon monoxide, CO di- 2 carbon dioxide, CO2 tri- 3 sulfurtrioxide, SO3 Tetr(a)- 4 carbon tetrachloride, CCl4 Pent(a)- 5 phosphorus pentafluoride, PF5

11 Practice #1 PCl3 1. Write the names of both elements in the same order
Phosphorus Chlorineide 2. Add pre-fixes(Remember prefix “mono” is never used for the first element.) Phosphorus trichloride

12 Name the Molecular Compounds
N2O NI2 CCl4 OF2 P2O5 N2O3

13 Write the formula for the following molecular compounds
Carbon Monoxide Sulfur Tetrafluoride DinitrogenTetroxide NitrogenTribromide Carbon disulfide
