3 Essential Questions How are the relationships between certain variables related to motion. How is motion affected by gravity and other forces? How can the motion of an object be predicted from certain data about various variables?

4 Write to Think 169 Find your purple calendar and read what is planned for the remaining 10 days of school! Add to lesson 172, 5/16 Tues: 15 min for MC 20 mins of time to … do what’s necessary. Add to lesson 174, 5/18 Thurs: ALL DUE AT END OF DAY! When will your team do the following? Make video documentary (5 min long see yellow sheet) Create team and jet racer name plate (see half white sheet) Review for MC (see MC practice questions hand out) Complete your BPJR as best you can? Lab open for building before school and after school to 4:15pm Mon to Thurs next week

6 Safety Tips and Instructions
BACKPACKS and BINDERS. LNB and pencil PLEASE DO NOT USE LABTOPS IF YOU ARE BUILDING … CLEAR UP FIRST You MAY use an iPAD … BUT remember they cost about $600 to replace! Safety and noise …. MUST be able to hear EVERYONE! (NO AIR CALLS!) Respect … materials, room, each other, self! This is a science lab … not a play room! Remember this at ALL times! Walk, carry carefully and be safe for others Do NOT burst balloons, OR make silly noise. PLEASE! TOOLS use at your bench, (NOT MINE!) cutting board, heavy duty board, put back so others can find them! Glue gun area … clean, on card. HOT! STUFF … help yourself BUT keep it neat please. Cars MAY ONLY move from the back to the front of the room. (Not side to side or front to back … PLEASE!). Drive on the right!!!

7 Clear up Please DO NOT take balloons, materials, out of the lab
Leave lab as TIDY and ORGANIZED as it was when you came in. Tools back in correct places … check your boxes! Glue guns! Boxes back … NEATLY stacked Recycle OR trash Bench, floor etc. neat and tidy. Save any work on iPads … on your drive. THEN … Add to your LNB … discuss with team your findings. RECORD!! This should take at least 5 minutes!! (Also see LNB instructions and rubric … salmon sheet) Pictures are very useful … if they are labelled!

In your Lab note book!!! Neat. So someone else can read and understand your processes Reasons for materials, design etc using Newton’s 3 Laws etc. Daily reflection of at least 5 sentences plus … Diagrams, drawings, pictures Record progress/work Record questions and problems. Why don’t we … The acceleration … How could we … The mass … Shouldn’t we … The air resistance/drag … Experimentation … what did you change (variables) and why? Data Conclusions

11 Explain the findings! Explanations should include the answers to following questions What makes the car move forward? In which direction is the car moving? In which direction is the air that rushes out the balloon moving? What are some variables that can be manipulated to improve the car’s speed? How will you experiment with the nozzle, letting the air out from the balloon? Why? What have you thought about the mass of your BPRC? What have you thought about drag or air resistance? What have you thought about good old friction!

15 Action - Reaction The forces exerted by two objects on each other are often called an action-reaction force pair. Either force can be considered the action force or the reaction force. Action and reaction force pairs don’t cancel because they act on different objects.

16 Newton’s Third Law Newton’s Third Law of Motion states: for every action force, there is an equal but opposite reaction force. This means that when you push on a wall, the wall pushes back on you with a force equal in strength to the force you exerted.

Balloon demonstration. Push a pencil point into your hand … what do you notice? (AF and RF?) Push your hand against the corner of the lab bench … what do you notice? How do you swim? What are the action-reaction force pairs for a girl kicking a soccer ball?

Spare ones on the side of the lab … help yourself. Make sure the box has your name on it: Markers and labels at the back of the lab Make sure it’s in the right location: Signs on the cupboards over the back bench to show you where. Keep it neat and tidy please! Thank you!

21 Feed back about BPRC Lab Rubric
HOW are you persevering and working hard to achieve a level 3 for PSR? Did you have partner voice or an outside voice while making constructive comments during the entire lab. SAFETY! Were you on task the entire time or were you involved in side conversations with your teammates and others. Were you able to complete the work on time and demonstrate good teamwork skills. Were you polite and respectful towards yourself, your teacher, your team and the materials in the classroom. Be honest with yourself and give a PSR score for yesterday’s lab. Read the rubric and identify the areas to work on today … to achieve at least a level 3.5

22 Things to keep in mind while designing the BPJR
What are the problems you came across while trying to make the hot wheel car move with the help of balloon? Did you experiment with the different type of nozzles? Which one worked best? How can you make your car move from back to front instead of going from side to side? What are the other factors you are thinking to improve upon while designing the BPJR? Don’t forget the wooden block! REM: The BPJR has to perform THREE times!
