URANUS
2
The Founder William Herschel
Uranus was founded in 1781, by William Herschel, with the help of a telescope, He thought the planet was a star or comet at first. It took 2 years for it to be accepted as a planet, with the help of Johann Elert Bode. Herschel tried to name it Georgium Sidus, after King George III, but Bode suggested Uranus, from the Greek God of the sky.

Solar System 7th planet from the sun. (19.2 Au and 150,000,000 Km)
Orbital Period: 84 Years Rotation: 17 hours 14 mins

Rings Names of the rings
Uranus has 13 presently known rings. Usually a few kilometers wide They are said to be composed of moons or parts of moons that were shattered by high speed impacts with an object like a comet or asteroid. 1986U2R, 6, 5, 4, Alpha, Beta, Eta, Gamma, Delta, Lambda, Epsilon, Nu and Mu Uranus and its rings

The Earth compared to Uranus!!
Measurements The Earth compared to Uranus!! Mass: × 10^25 kg Gravity: 8.69 m/s Equatorial Circumference: 99,018.1 Miles Volume: × 10^15 Km Mean Density: g/cm^3 If you weighed 100 lbs. on Earth, you would weigh 88.9 lbs. on Uranus

The Moons Uranus has 27 moons.
Fun Fact: Unlike other moons orbiting other planets, all the moons of Uranus are named after Shakespearean characters and some named after characters from Alexander Poe’s works. Cordelia Ophelia Bianca Cressida Desdemona Juliet Portia Rosalind Mab Belinda Perdita Puck Cupid Miranda Francisco Ariel Umbriel Titania Oberon Caliban Stephano Trinculo Sycorax Margaret Prospero Setebos Ferdinand

The most interesting moon on Uranus : Miranda (or Uranus V)
The most interesting moon on Uranus : Miranda (or Uranus V) Miranda was discovered by Gerard Kuiper in 1948 Miranda is the smallest moon of the major 5 with a diameter of 470 kilometers (290 miles) it is also the innermost. It consists of huge fault canyons as deep as 12 miles, terraced layers and a mixture of old and young surfaces The largest of the cliffs is 3 miles high, nearly three times as high as the walls of the Grand Canyon on Earth. Miranda's appearance can be explained by theories, but the real reason is still unknown. A feature on this moon called “chevron” is a series of light and dark grooves arranged in a V- shape that is shown in every picture of this moon. Close ups of Miranda

Surface Conditions The seasons, which last over 20 years, on Uranus don’t differ much because its so far from the sun but the average temperature is -357 degrees Fahrenheit The temperature in the upper atmosphere is so cold that the methane condenses and forms a thin cloud layer. It can reach speeds up to 600 km per hour. The rapid spin influences the winds. Astronomers suspect that the whole planet is made of mostly water. The water should be vapor but the heat and pressure turns it into super heated liquid.

Composition and Atmosphere
Core composition: Icy Materials Liquid Core Surface Composition: Uranus is a ice giant so it doesn’t have a surface. The planet is mostly swirling fluids. Minor Gases: Methane Traces of water Ammonia Major Gases: Hydrogen Helium

The Voyager 2 flying pass Uranus
Exploration The only spacecraft to have flown by Uranus is The Voyager 2. It flew pass January in 1986 at a distance of around 18,500 Km This was the first time any probe had ever seen Uranus and its moons. All of the information we have of Uranus is based on this exploration. The Voyager 2 flying pass Uranus
