1 Maths Unit 1 - Algebra Order of operations - BIDMAS Algebraic Notation
Function Machines Collecting like terms Expanding Brackets Substitution To expand a bracket you must multiply everything on the inside of the bracket by what is on the outside. Only like terms can be put together e.g. terms with the same letter. Function machines show what happens to a number to produce the output. If you know the output, you can perform the inverse operations to find the input. To find ‘C’ you must replace the letters with the values given and then calculate the sum. Key words and definitions Operation – mathematical process e.g. + - x ÷ or 2 Powers – how many times to use the small number in a multiplication e.g = 8 x 8 Indices – means the same as powers Term – in algebra is a single number or variable or numbers and variables mixed together e.g. 4a, b or -7 Expression – in algebra this is a combination of terms e.g. 4f + 3 Simplify – in algebra, this means to write in its simplest form e.g. 4a + a + 2a can be written as 7a Substitution – where letters are replace with values so a sum can be calculated
