Introduce evidence/begin your analysis Include irrelevant information Start with a dictionary definition Make overly broad, generalizations about your topic Announce your intentions

Discuss the implications of your argument Expands/makes connections to the Big Picture Can explain how the essay topic relates to the book as a whole Can give your opinion about the novel’s value or significance Ask a novel/provocative question
