Leadership

LEADERSHIP The ability to encourage people to work together & do their best to achieve common goals A leader guides others, or is in charge or command of others Anyone can be a leader In a group every member who makes a contribution to an idea can be considered a leader 3 types of leaders: democratic, laissez-faire, autocratic

LEADERSHIP Democratic = encourages the participation of all individuals in decisions Can you think of any examples? George Washington: Unlike commanding troops during the American Revolution, Washington was notably democratic when guiding the U.S. government. He showed early signs of his democratic leadership style by appointing strong leaders to his staff. His decision not to serve a third term exemplified a democratic leader who knows when to pass the torch.

LEADERSHIP Laissez-faire = believes in noninterference in the affairs of others; strives for only minimal rules; hands-off policy Can you think of any examples? Steve Jobs is famous for his off-kilter leadership style. He would inform his employees of his vision, tell them what should be done, and let them get to work without him hovering over their shoulders. If he was unhappy with the end product, Jobs was also famous for firing those who disappointed him. Mahatma Gandhi was a laissez- faire leader. Gandhi believed that people should lead by example and be the change that they wish to see in the world so that others can follow.

LEADERSHIP Autocratic = often called a “dictator”; maintains total rule & makes all the decisions Can you think of any examples? This leadership style is usually employed by military commanders. North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un exemplifies this leadership style.
