How do waves travel

Different types of Waves travel differently through different materials
Sound waves travel fastest through solids, like metals. require a medium so they do NOT travel through space Electromagnetic waves travel fastest through a vacuum, like space. do not require a medium so they DO travel through space

reflection Occurs when a wave strikes an object and bounces off of it

refraction The bending of a wave as it changes speed in moving from one medium to another

diffraction Occurs when an object causes a wave to change direction and bend around it

interference When two or more waves overlap and combine to form a new wave

Absorption This occurs when a wave hits a object and the object absorbs some of the Energy. This means the Energy reflected back is weaker It can also show through white light Think of a T-shirt, if you are standing outside in white light and your shirt is green. The reason it appears green is because the shirt absorbs all the visible wavelengths of light EXCEPT green. Green is being reflected back to your eyes. Why would your shirt appear white? Why would your shirt appear black?

Hearing Test The Doppler effect The change in pitch (wave frequency) due to a moving wave source
