Why Settle in America? Economic Opportunity Religious Freedom

Economic Opportunity People came to America for several reasons
Many settlers wanted a chance to earn a living America offered land for farming and other jobs

Religious Freedom People came to America for religious freedom
During this time there was religious unrest in Europe Groups were persecuted because of their religious beliefs (persecuted: treated harshly)

The Puritans Founded Massachusetts when they escaped religious persecution in England Wanted reform Called themselves pilgrims Were religious dissenters-left England to worship God in their own way

Colonial Life The colonists came to America from many places and for a variety of reasons They had different lives depending on where they lived By 1733 there were 13 English colonies along the Atlantic Coast of North America The geography influenced the colony's economy

Economy: a system for making choices about ways to use scarce resources to make and distribute goods and services to fulfill people’s needs and wants

The New England Colonies
Located farthest north Farming was difficult due to climate and poor soil Worked as shop keepers and other small businesses Employed in shipbuilding and fishing Colonists hunted and trapped animals to sell fur

The Middle Colonies Climate and soil were better for agriculture
Farmers raised wheat and cash crops Also rich in resources there were sawmills, mines, and ironworks in the region Colonists depended resources such as lumber, metals, and natural harbors

The Southern Colonies Warm climate with long growing system and rich soil resulted in a lot of farming Tobacco because the main cash crop Plantations developed

Colonial Government Colonies developed different economics, however they shared similar English heritage Most colonists were loyal to England and valued their rights as English subjects

Factors that weakened the ties between England and its Colonies:
England's government paid little attention to the colonies Parliament began passing laws to regulate colonies trade Many colonists believed the governor that was appointed by the king put British interest ahead of their own They resented the fact that they had fewer rights than people who lived in Great Britain
