1 Sperm Assembly Line Unlike females, who have all their eggs present at birth and only release them one by one during menstruation, a sexually mature guy makes millions of sperm a day. But where does a sperm cell start? How does it develop? Where does it go? Create a chain diagram that shows the path of a sperm from creation to ejaculation. Be sure to include what the sperm looks like, how it moves, and what happens at each of the following body parts: • testicles • seminiferous tubules • epididymis • vas deferens • seminal vesicles • prostate gland • urethra • penis

2 Where does the sperm travel after ejaculation?
During sex, millions of sperm are released via semen into the female’s vagina. Using the textbooks, put the vocabulary words in order of where the sperm travels once entering the vagina, fertilizing the egg, and ending with childbirth through the vagina. Uterus (used twice) Cervix (used twice) Vagina (used twice) Fallopian Tubes

3 Sperm crossing over into new territory…
Vagina Sexual intercourse occurs here. Cervix Sperm moves through small opening. Uterus Sperm is passing through but plans on returning. Fallopian Tubes Fertilization occurs and the zygote travels to the uterus. Embryo attaches to the endometrium. Fetus develops for 9 months. Dilates to 10 centimeters. New born travels down the Birth Canal and into the world.

5 First Trimester 1st 14 weeks of pregnancy
Most important trimester because this is when the vital structures are forming. Embryo develops all of its organs and grows to about 1.5 inches. heart, brain, lungs, eyes, arms, and legs have formed; not all of them are fully functional Placenta and umbilical cord are also formed during this time.

6 Second Trimester Months 4-6 of pregnancy Organs continue to develop
Movement can be felt by month 4 Heartbeat can be heard The fetus can recognize voices and the fetus’ hair and nails grow By the end of the 2nd trimester, the fetus is about inches long and about 2 pounds/

7 Third Trimester Months 7-9 of pregnancy
The fetus gains most of its weight during this trimester The fetus is able to grasp objects as well as open and close its eyes

8 Fetal Development: Month by Month
What to Expect During Labor

9 Labor/Natural Birth The culmination of a human pregnancy with the emergence of a newborn infant(s) from the mother's uterus. Natural Birth which is most common is when the baby is delivered through the vagina. First stage: contractions/dilation Second stage: delivery Third stage: placenta/afterbirth LDn9r9P9F4oETi-Swz3H0-PHqHx2KV3PT&index=1

10 Caesarean Birth A caesarean section or c-section, is a form of childbirth in which a surgical incision is made through a mother's abdomen and uterus to deliver one or more babies It is usually performed when a vaginal delivery would put the baby or mothers life at risk, although in the last decade it has been performed upon request. 48VnRYUY&list=PLDn9r9P9F4oETi- Swz3H0-PHqHx2KV3PT&index=2

11 STDs/STIs Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are generally acquired by sexual contact. The organisms that cause sexually transmitted diseases may pass from person to person in: blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids. Some such infections can also be transmitted nonsexually, such as from mother to infant during pregnancy or childbirth, or through blood transfusions or shared needles. It's possible to contract sexually transmitted diseases from people who seem perfectly healthy — people who, in fact, aren't even aware of being infected. Many STDs cause no symptoms in some people, which is one of the reasons experts prefer the term "sexually transmitted infections" to "sexually transmitted diseases."

12 Completing the Chart As we go through the STD Picture Slideshow, complete the chart. Chart can be used on the test. w/article.htm
