Progress Where am I now? A resource designed to help learners consider their long term goals and aspirations. A short PowerPoint presentation for staff to use directly with learners.

How to use this resource
Rationale/Outline Ofsted inspections have repeatedly found that provision of study programmes are a concern highlighting: - A lack of rigour in the targets set to improve learner progress. To support learners with effective target setting we need to develop these skills to ensure that they see the study programme as a whole and link to their long term goals and aspiration. Suggestions on how to use this resource Staff can use the notes and questions under the power point slides with learners to prompt discussion in groups or individual tutorials. Use the card sort activity to help learners consider their own priorities. Print out the template slides and encourage learners to make notes. Impact Personalised learner targets which are mapped to career goals to maximise learner progress. An improvement in target setting will support learners in setting their own high aspirations to accelerate progress to achieve their chosen career route and employment destination. Staff can use with learners as above or learners can access individually. All about me Consider these statements:
I enjoy working with people, I like the idea of being part of a team. I’m looking for a steady job with good job security. I want to advance my knowledge and skills. I would like to progress into higher education. I would like to be in a management role. I enjoy taking on responsibility and I’d like to lead a team of people. I want to take responsibility for my own time, choose what I do, how and when. I want to be my own boss and run my own business one day. My progress – What helps me Card sort activity Consider these answers and select 4 in order of priority. Being treated like an adult. Opportunities to talk through problems or issues. Group work and group activities. Time to reflect. Activity based and practical lessons. Taking responsibility for my own progress. Being given choices. Being listened to. Once placed in order of priority, compare with others and talk in pairs. Make a note of the to four answers and discuss with your tutor at your next tutorial. Print this and cut out cards. How will the study programme help me to achieve my career goal? Discussion about different types of career choices will inform learners of options available to them. Learners can then research careers and requirements for their chosen pathway. Print this slide as an individual handout. Ask learners to discuss in groups or pairs and then complete. An example: Animal care programme – work placement Boarding Kennels.
Working out individual rations will help me to understand the breeds and demonstrate my knowledge and understanding. Calculating the rations will demonstrate my ability to use maths in the workplace. Working out the order based on needs and current stock will prove my initiative. Presenting my findings to the manager will show I can communicate. Recording in my work placement logbook will help to evidence my progress. Use the maths calculations sheet from college to work out individual rations of dog food based on the height and weight of the dogs currently housed. Using this information, calculate requirements for the next month, check current stock and calculate the order required. Present my calculations and findings to the manager. Record in my work placement log book. An example of the type of target learners could be encouraged to write.
