4 Our Targets for Today I can evaluate student work and provide descriptive feedback using the informational/explanatory rubric. I can use the “Jurying Tool” to identify characteristics of “Good to Go” modules and to evaluate LDC teaching tasks and modules. I can understand the expectations and my responsibilities as a member of the ELA Teacher Leader Network. I can identify instructional practices that are rigorous and congruent with KCAS. I can set personal goals to advance the vision of 21st Century Learning. Linda

6 Annotating Text Unlike "highlighting," which is a passive activity, the process of annotating text helps you to stay focused and involved with your text. Underline important terms. Circle definitions and meanings. Write key words and definitions in the margin. Signal where important information can be found with key words or symbols in the margin. Write short summaries in the margin at the end of sub-units. Write the questions in the margin next to the section where the answer is found. Indicate steps in a process by using numbers in the margin. Jennifer: Annotation Handout

7 Practice Annotating While reading the Kappan article, “Teaching to the Common Core by Design, Not Accident,” use the ACT Quality Core Annotation symbols. You could choose simple symbols to use with elementary students. It is the practice, not the symbol! Jennifer Annotation and Kappan Article Handouts

8 T-CHART TIME! Take a moment and add notes to your T-Chart
Guiding Questions What information do I most want to remember? How will I share it with others in my school and/or district? Jennifer Reflect on the day’s learning so far and make notes about what you think is most important for others in your building to know.

9 Deconstructing the LDC Scoring Rubric for Informational/Explanatory
Number 1-7 at your table. Each number will review a different scoring element, noting the different expectations at each performance level. 1 – Focus 2 – Controlling Ideas 3 – Reading/Research 4 – Development 5 – Organization 6 – Conventions 7 – Content Understanding Be prepared to share with your group. 10 Scoring Your Student’s Work
Linda Connections to the ELA Standards

11 Providing Effective Feedback
Descriptive Feedback: Using the back of the Scoring Rubric for Informational/Explanatory, provide descriptive feedback to a student by noting it in the appropriate place on the sheet. 3 Minute Conference Activity Linda Back of I/E Rubric Handout and 3 Minute Conference Handout

12 Self-Evaluating Teaching Task and Instructional Plan
Now that some student work has been scored: Which elements seem strongest? What might explain that pattern? Which elements seem weakest? What might explain that pattern? How will you respond to difficulties that affected students? What “next steps” will you take? Linda “THINK ABOUT” QUESTIONS to guide the self-evaluation Identify Instructional Implications Differentiation; Flexible Grouping; Gaps; Next Steps;

13 Plan-Do-Review Take a moment and add notes to your P-D-R
Guiding Questions What information will you share? How will you share the information? What concerns do you still have? Linda

14 “Jurying” Tool The “Jurying” Tool is a two (2) phase system
for evaluating the quality of: Teaching Tasks LDC Modules Jennifer

15 “Jurying” Tool There are two scoring guides designed to be used together: Teaching Task Scoring Guide Module Scoring Guide Jennifer Field Test Jurying Document Handout

16 “Jurying” Tool Each scoring guide includes two levels of feedback
Holistic which is designed to give an overall rating of “Good to Go” or “Needs Revision” Annotated which provides feedback for revisions Jennifer Field Test Jurying Document Handout

18 Goal? The goal of “jurying” the Teaching Tasks and Modules is to move them from “personal work” to “public commentary”—getting modules ready to share publicly. All modules MUST have student work to be “ Good to Go” Jennifer Field Test Jurying Document Handout

19 Break Time! 10:40 – 10:50 a.m.

20 Time to “Jury” Work in pairs at table, using your Information/Explanatory Modules. First, use “Jurying” Tool to score your own and your partner’s teaching task and module. Then, pass the pair’s modules to the right until all are scored. Next, as a table, have discussion to sort modules into “Good to Go”, “Needs Minor Revisions”, “Needs Major Revisions”. Jennifer Field Test Jurying Document Handout and I/E Module brought today

21 What did you notice about the “Good to Go?”
What revisions were needed for the “Needs minor revisions?” What are other thoughts/reflections about this process? Jennifer Field Test Jurying Document Handout and I/E Module brought today

33 Impact Logs Very important that your work is documented and submitted to KDE… Complete a log for any work you have done in your district. This includes, but is not limited to, meetings attended/participated, trainings and informational sessions conducted, etc.  In other words, anything you do that is related to the work of the network initiative. (If you don’t have documentation of specific dates, just include the month) The documentation log asks very specific questions and some of them will NOT pertain to every activity you have done and/or will do in the future.  The point is that you work is documented!  Logs should be submitted to me by the end of each month. Electronic version is available on Bb. Logs should be submitted to Carole Mullins in hard copy or via at the end of each month.

34 Remember… Turn in your evaluations and Impact Logs before you leave! Our next meeting is September 25, 2012 EVALUATIONS!!!!!!! Impact Logs Certificate Have A Great
