Who were the Progressives
pg. 75 The Progressives were individuals or groups of people who wanted to reform the ills of society and government, largely caused by Industrialization Corruption (business and government) Poverty Sickness and disease Conservation and consumer protection

Muckrakers Pgs. 75, 82 Some individuals in society used their talents and skills to bring attention to the problems in society, and they were known as “muckrakers.” Raking up the muck (problems) hidden to the eyes of some. Upton Sinclair: wrote “The Jungle,” which exposed the unsanitary working conditions in Chicago’s meat-packing industry Ida Tarbell: investigative journalism that called into question the business practices of Rockefeller’s Standard Oil (add to notes) Jacob Riis: Examined the plight of the urban poor in the tenements

Upton Sinclair brought attention to the unsanitary, unsafe working conditions in the meat-packing industry, Ida Tarbell crusaded against Standard Oil, Jacob Riis showed people what tenement living was like

Temperance ADD to notes Temperance was a movement of the Progressives to ban the sale, and consumption of alcohol Some Progressives thought alcohol consumption was the root of many societal evils Eventually they get the 18th Amendment to the Constitution passed, banning sale and consumption of liquor

Women’s Suffrage Pgs 75, 77 Some Progressives were supporters of women’s suffrage (the right to vote) Susan B. Anthony and other suffragettes form the National Women’s Suffrage Association, to push for the right to vote Eventually they will be victorious with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave women the right to vote

Jane Addams and Settlement Houses
Jane Addams also helped new immigrants through her establishment of settlement houses: These places gave new immigrants a temporary place to stay, help looking for a job, English language instruction
