1 Geometric Solids Everyday Math Lesson 11.1

2 Lesson Objectives I can compare and classify geometric solids.
I can describe and classify polyhedrons according to their faces.

3 Mental Math ¾ 33 1/3 % /5 12 ½ % /5 87 ½ % 1.25 Mentally convert between fractions, decimals, and percents (or refer to probability meter)

4 Math Message ( 3 minutes)
Name an object that is shaped like a geometric solid. I will hand out post-it notes to the students when they enter the classroom to use during the math message.

5 Math Message Follow-Up
There are 5 different types of geometric solids. *Prisms *Pyramids *Cylinders *Cones *Spheres Geometric Figures are described by their surfaces, edges and vertices.

6 At least 1 of their surfaces in NOT flat!
Geometric Solids Look at pg. 149 in the SRB. Are all geometric solids also polyhedrons? Why? Cone Cylinder Sphere At least 1 of their surfaces in NOT flat!

7 Let’s Investigate! * Describe a regular polyhedron.
Geometric solids with faces that are all the same size and shape. 6 sided dice are considered fair because there is an equal chance of any one of the 6 landing on top when the dice is thrown. Is rolling a polyhedron dice fair???

8 Independent Work On your own at a level 0, complete Math boxes on page 371. When you are finished, you may work on Study Link 11.1
