New Technologies (consumerism): Refrigeration, telephones, other household appliances. Families went into debt to pay

4 Conflicting Ideas Seen as a time of prosperity but rural areas continued to struggle Fundamentalism Christians feared the rising consumerism Scopes Trial- Evolution vs the Bible Unions vs Employers- Companies hired migrant workers to bypass unions, but paid them low wages and worked long hours. Workers After WW1, soldiers suffered physically and psychologically Americans were against our involvement in WW1 Women were give the right to vote and other social freedoms

5 Harlem Renaissance Great Migration- African Americans moved North for better economic opportunities Many moved to Harlem section of New York. Rise in African American art, writings, and music Also rise in KKK. Preferred Fundamentalism to science, rural to urban, and natives to immigrants.

6 6.4 Writing Assignment Analyze the role of cultural conflict as a force shaping US society in the 1920s. You need to analyze one document: Scopes Trial (Fundamentalism vs Science) Anti-Lynching Broadside (Anti-lynching Bill) Call for Unity Between Black and White Laborers (Workers vs Employers, Also White vs Black- Unions rarely included African Americans) Automobile Factory Photograph (Workers vs Employers, new technologies, consumerism) Select one document and describe the historical context and write a thesis, how the document represents cultural conflict Then choose a second document, and explain if you would change your thesis or not

Make sure you understand the following: Red Scare Bisbee Deportation 100% American US Borders Immigration Act of 1924 Labor Organizations Great Depression Dust Bowl Migrant Workers from Mexico

8 Red Scare Russian revolution in 1917
Fear of communism, socialism, and anarchy spread to the US. Also labor International Workers of the World Union had ties to socialism and anarchy. Frequently went on strikes. IWW represented immigrants US government told people IWW was a cover organization for Russian communists, and wanted to destroy American workforce and way of life

9 Bisbee Deportation IWW, representing migrant workers demanded better working conditions for m the Bisbee Mining Corporation, but were denied Armed forces came in to stop any striking and deported workers. Deemed illegal by the federal government but went unpunished

10 Restricted Immigration
Immigration Act of restricted Immigration from Asia and Southern Europe. Western Hemisphere was left out of restriction Borders were tightened everywhere except border with Mexico With Red Scare in the US, government rounded up and deported anyone they identified as political threats

11 Great Depression 1929 Stock Market Crashed leading to the Great Depression 1930s- Major drought and poor farming practices led to Dust Bowl Nativism and Xenophobia led to Mexicans not being welcomed (Nativism and Xnophobia are highest during periods of economic downturn) Bracero program during WW2- US needed workers so they welcomed Mexican immigrants again
