I. Women’s role in the war
A. Women took over work in and around the house B. Many joined their husbands at the Front C. Betsy Ross and others sewed flags for battles D. a few women fought when husband was dead or wounded ( mary Ludwig hays, AKA Molly Pitcher)

II Women of the Revolution
Sybil Ludington 1. known as “female Paul Revere” 2. 16 YO who mounted her horse on an April Night in 1777 to ride through countryside and got the local militia to grab arms and go fight B. Deborah Sampson “Robert Shurtleff” 1. Fought in the war, shot in the leg and hid the injury 2. Found to be a woman when she caught Yellow fever and was taken to the hospital. She was given an honorable discharge

C. Ann Bates 1. Schoolteacher 2. Loyalist (remained loyal to Britain) 3. Assumed a false name and acted as a peddler and counted Patriot troops as they came through Philadelphia

III Women’s rights After all that women went through they felt that they should have more rights under the law. Colonial leaders did not agree. Thankful for their work Still thought women had no place in a “public role” Women should “be seen not heard

IV. Slaves 1776- 500,000 slaves lived in colonies.
British offered enslaved black men freedom if they fought for them. General Washington wanted only free black men to enlist . 5,000 black men from all colonies served, Exception was South Carolina 2,000 served in navy- the navy allowed black men to join from the start 9 black minutemen saw action at Lexington and Concord. Prince Estabrook was wounded. Peter salem and Salem Poor , went on to fight at Bunker HIll Saul Matthews and James Armistead were spies.

V. Hoping for Freedom Several thousand black men joined the British side by the end of the war so that they could be free men. Black Patriots hoped the end of war would bring an end to slavery. 1. Cited the Declaration of Independence for saying “ all men are created equal” 2. Some white leaders wanted the same. James Otis said “colonists are by the law of nature free born, as indeed all men are, white or black.” quakers spoke out against slavery By 1770s, slavery was declining in the North. During the war many colonies wanted to make slavery illegal. (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania)

Indians aid Britain A. As war spread west, both sides tried to win support of the Indian tribes. British were more successful by convincing the Indians that a Patriot win would mean more white settlers coming into their territory. B. In the South the British gained support of several Indian groups. (Cherokees, creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Iroquois, and Miami) The British encouraged the Indians to attack settlements to the north and South
