Tectonic Plate: Pieces of the lithosphere that move around on top of the asthenosphere are called tectonic plates. Tectonic plates consist of the crust and the rigid, outermost part of the mantle.

Tectonic Plates are made up of lithosphere, which is the crust plus the upper mantle.
Plates float, touch, and move around Plates cover the layer below, the asthenosphere.

How do we know? Geologists measure earthquake waves
Seismic Waves travel at different speeds. The speed depends on the density and composition of the material. Waves travel faster through a solid than a liquid.
