5 How was post-war Economy Affected?
Govt not in control of the economy anymore. People want goods that had been rationed – Companies want to raise prices. Inflation increased the cost of living BUT - Factories laid off workers b/c govt not ordering supplies anymore

6 Inflation Led to Strikes by the Workers
General Strikes occurred where a whole community would band together Police in Boston went on Strike – widespread panic ensued, riots Steel Strike – 350,000 workers – US Steel refused to compromise Carnegie blames strike on “foreigners” & “Communist labor unions”

African Americans had migrated north to work in factories during war & served in segregated units during the war Blacks wanted to be treated equally BUT…. Blamed for taking white jobs Frustration + racism = violence 1919 – 25 Race riots throughout America White mobs attack first, AA respond

11 What was the Red Scare? Idea that Communists were trying to take over America Since 1800s Americans accused foreigners of bringing socialist and communist ideas to America Russian Revolution fueled the idea that the “Reds” were trying to take over America

A bomb blows up at Attorney general A. Mitchell Palmer’s home In response govt begins a series of raids, aimed at “communist sympathizers” Groups like IWW (Eugene Debs) and other labor unions are targeted

14 What were the result of the Palmer Raid?
Creation of the FBI to investigate crimes Americans began to support deportation without a trial American’s began to give up their civil liberties / rights in exchange for “protection”
