2 The Native Americans of the Chino Valley
The Tongva Tribe, also known as the Gabrieleno, were the first people to live in the Chino Valley area. They made their home along the Chino Creek. We can learn a lot from how they took care of their environment and natural resources. Click on the link to learn more about the Tongva. You will be making a timeline to document the history of the Chino Valley. Add your first event about the Tongva.

3 The Missions Spanish missionaries arrived in 1770, causing the life of the Tongva to change forever. The missions were like large churches built on the same land as the Tongva villages. Many Tongva died of diseases brought by the missionaries, others were forced to work as slaves on the mission lands. Watch the video to find out more about how the missionaries affected the Tongva. 4 Ranchos The Spanish and later the Mexican governments wanted people to settle and live in the region now called California. The government would give wealthy men large amounts of land called Ranchos. Rancho Santa Ana del Chino was granted to Antonio Lugo in Cattle grazed the Rancho land. The Rancho was then passed to Isaac Williams and eventually to Richard Gird. Isaac Williams Add the Ranchos to your timeline.

5 Rural Chino California became a state soon after the Gold Rush. The main economy in the Chino Valley was cattle, dairy, corn, and sugar beets.

6 Chino Now Chino became a city in Chino Hills became a city in The two cities are now considered to be the Chino Valley. The dairies have slowly moved out of the Chino Valley, which is now a suburb of Los Angeles. Click to learn about historical sites in Chino. Add an event to your timeline.
