Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare
Basic Animal Industry AFNR-BAS-9: Define major components of the animal industry and outline the development of the resulting products, services, and careers.
2
Human Use of Animals Animal rights and animal welfare often fall on the same side of an issue but the main difference between the two beliefs is the right of humans to use animals Most people find that their positions change depending on the issue What is socially acceptable varies from one culture to the next. For example, eating dogs is morally offensive to some, but some cultures object to the practice of eating cows.
3
Animal Rights Core belief is that humans do not have a right to use non-human animals for our own purposes at all. Including food, clothing, entertainment and research A philosophical view that animals have rights similar to or the same as humans Proponents wish to ban all use of animals by humans
4
Animal Rights Support laws and regulations that would prohibit rodeos, horse racing, circuses, hunting, life-saving medical research using animals, raising of livestock for food, petting zoos, marine parks , breeding of purebred pets and any use of animals for industry, entertainment, sport or recreation Animal Rights activists are known to use misinformation, publicity stunts, and vandalism to bring awareness to their cause.
5
Animal Welfare Believe humans do have a right to utilize animals for some purposes, but that the animals should be treated better Animal Welfare is defined by the American Veterinary Medical Association as a human responsibility that encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, humane handling, and, when necessary, humane euthanasia.
6
Animal Welfare Supporters consider some uses unacceptable because the human benefit is minimal compared to the amount of animal suffering involved - include uses like fur, cosmetics testing, canned hunting, and dog fighting Seek to improve the treatment and well-being of animals Believe that humans can interact with animals in entertainment, industry, sport and recreation, and industry, but that the interaction should include provisions for the proper care and management for all animals involved
7
Animal Welfare Support self-regulation of animal sports, including rodeo, polo, three-day eventing, FFA competitions, horse racing, field trials and endurance riding Animal welfare groups utilize scientific evidence to base animal care and handling guidelines.
