1 Read the scenario provided.
Stand under the letter which you agree with the most.

2 Divide your paper into two columns.

3 Rotate Revolve Vs.

4 Rotate Spin or turn on an axis Earth is tilted at 23.5° Takes:
24 hours or 1 day Earth is tilted at 23.5°

5 Causes: Day Night

6 Revolve Go around The Earth revolves counter-clockwise Takes:
365 days or 1 year The Earth revolves counter-clockwise

7 Causes: Spring Summer Fall Winter SEASONS

8 Using your notes, complete the cardsort with your shoulder partner.

9 Rotate/Rotation Revolve/Revolution Earth spins on its axis
Takes 24 hours to complete Is how we measure one day Creates the Day/Night Cycle Causes changes in shadows Reason the Sun appears to move Moves counter-clockwise Spinning on imaginary line Creates the sunset in the west Creates the sunrise in the East Earth travels on its orbit This & Earth’s tilt cause the seasons Is how we measure one year Moves counter-clockwise Planets do this around the Sun Takes 365 days to complete Moon does this around Earth To move around an object

10 Rotate/Rotation Revolve/Revolution

11 Discuss the following questions with your shoulder partner
Discuss the following questions with your shoulder partner. Be ready to share your thoughts with the class.

12 What is an example of an object that is both rotating and revolving?
A child riding on a teacup ride is one possible example. The child can make rotations in the teacup; while the base of the ride, to which the teacup is attached, is making revolutions. 2.What would Earth be like if it did not rotate? One day on Earth would equal one year

13 It would stay the same season all of the time.
3.What would the seasons on Earth be like if it did not revolve around the Sun but stayed in place in relation to the Sun? It would stay the same season all of the time. 4. How would life on Earth be different if Earth was not tilted at 23.5°? The equator would be stuck in the summer-like conditions with the mid latitudes in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere being more temperate. Both poles would be stuck in winter-like conditions. All places on Earth would experience the same amount of daylight and dark night hours each day.

14 5. How would you design a model of Earth’s rotation causing day and night?
You could use a lamp to represent the Sun and a globe to represent the Earth.
