1 Week 4 Vocabulary: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

2 1. Insensate -- Without feeling or sensation; lacking sympathy or compassion. After Dave sat on his knees for a while, his leg “fell asleep” and became painfully insensate.

3 2. Lurid -- To be unnaturally vivid in color; harshly shocking or revolting. Mr. Hyde turned on the lawyer and shot him a lurid glance that was both menacing and unnatural.

4 3. Conflagration -- A big, destructive fire that destroys a great deal of land and property. The wildfire quickly became a dangerous conflagration that roared down the valley and consumed the town.

5 4. Assail -- To attack or to assault.
The two thieves waited at the end of the alley and planned to assail the rich man as he made his way home that night.

6 5. Hypocrisy -- Claiming to have beliefs or virtues that one does not really possess. The old woman claimed to hate gossip, but her hypocrisy was quickly revealed when she began to spread rumors she had heard at the beauty parlor.

7 6. Odious -- Hateful or contemptible.
Mr. Hyde was disliked by all he came in contact with due to his odious character and frightening countenance.

8 7. Luxury -- A state of great comfort and extravagant living; to own or do something expensive purely for enjoyment. Dr. Jekyll lived a life of luxury in a large house on a nice street in London.

9 8. Disinter -- To bring out into the open; to dig up from the grave.
Years after the mysterious murder, the police needed a DNA sample to confirm the identity of the victim; therefore, they had to disinter the body of the corpse.

10 9. Obscure -- Not well known; dim or unclear.
The obscure singer from a small town went on The Voice and became a household name overnight.

11 10. Detain -- To restrain from continuing; to hold back.
Mr. Enfield chased down Hyde and detained him until the trampled child’s family arrived.
