1
Characteristics of Life
2
1—Made up of cells They can be either unicellular or multicellular.
***Unicellular = made up of ONE cell Picture of a unicellular organism. Picture of a Cell ***Multi-cellular = made up of MORE than one cell Picture of multicellular organisms
3
Many Different types of cells make up the human body:
4
There are 2 types of reproduction:
1. Asexual 2. Sexual ***asexual = reproduction that requires ONE parent ***sexual = reproduction that requires TWO parents
5
Necessary for the survival of all living things
Why Reproduce?? Necessary for the survival of all living things No Reproduction = No Genes Passed On NO LIFE/Extinction March 2018
6
3—Based on a genetic code
2 Main Functions of DNA: Replication of Genetic Material Instructions for making proteins (Expression of Genetic Material) ***DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)= genetic code found in every cell. Inherited from parents Controls your traits.
7
Some Viruses Contain ONLY RNA…
8
4—Grow and Develop **All living things grow and develop during at least part of their life. Growing means INCREASING IN SIZE ***Think about it Do you look the same as when you were born????
9
5—Need for materials and energy
**Living things need a constant supply of materials and energy. Autotrophs (Producers) get energy from the SUN through PHOTOSYNTHESIS Heterotrophs (Consumers) get energy by EATING METABOLISM- BREAKING DOWN FOOD TO RELEASE ENERGY
10
6—Response to the environment
**Organisms detect and respond to STIMULI (or signals) from their environment. PHOTOTROPISM **Internal stimuli = inside the organism **External stimuli = outside the organism
11
7—Maintaining internal balance
Despite changing conditions around them, organism must keep their internal conditions stable/balanced. **Homeostasis: the process of keeping the internal environment stable/balance/constant
12
Organisms have the potential to CHANGE OVER TIME
8—Evolution Organisms have the potential to CHANGE OVER TIME
