2 Introduction Why are we focusing on call centers?
Thank you for joining us in the mission to raise awareness about prediabetes and prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes in call centers across America! Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic in the United States, especially within call centers. As a Quest Diagnostics Health & Wellness client you have the power to make a difference in your employee population. Did you know that approximately 84 million Americans have prediabetes, but nearly 90% of those individuals are unaware they have the condition.* The materials enclosed in this toolkit were designed to help you raise awareness about prediabetes and type 2 diabetes within your call centers. These pieces touch on the importance of completing a wellness screening and the impact of sustainable lifestyle changes, while promoting participation in healthy activities, biometric screenings, and the American Diabetes Association® online risk test. Why are we focusing on call centers? As a leader in the employee well-being industry, impacting over 4,400 employer clients and 3.5 million employee lives each year, we have found in our own data that call center employees are at the most risk for chronic health conditions within an employee population. Increase awareness. Identify health risks. Intervene and connect to care. Using this 3-point strategy as part of your well-being program, you will give your call center employees the knowledge they need to take an active role in their health and prevent type 2 diabetes. Increase awareness Promote statistics about prediabetes and type 2 diabetes by using the posters in this toolkit and sharing social media content with your call center population Identify health risks Direct individuals to the American Diabetes Association 1-minute online risk test Drive engagement in wellness screenings Intervene and connect to care Connect employees to resources, like Omada, PHIS, or other well-being offerings *According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017.

3 Tips for promoting call center health
In addition to providing biometric screenings, offering health intervention solutions, and promoting the risk test, there are multiple ways to prioritize the health of your call center employees. Below is a list of our top 10 ways to increase health literacy and engagement at these locations. Provide wireless headsets: Wireless headsets allow employees to get out of their chair while on the phone, enabling the ability to stand up or walk in place while working. Offer standing desks and exercise balls: Standing desks and exercise balls (to sit on) are great ways to passively add a little activity to the day. If you don’t have the resources to offer these to everyone, you can get a few and create a rotating schedule so that everyone who wants to is able to use the equipment. Host a nutrition challenge: Have all employees who want to participate log their food and track their calories. Then, the employee at the end of the week who had the healthiest meals wins a prize (just make sure the prize also promotes healthy behavior). Organize specified walking or stretching breaks: Schedule stretching or walking breaks where groups of people get up at once and are active together. You can use the poster on slide 5 to promote these activities. Schedule “with slack”: Create staggered schedules so that employees can take meaningful breaks to take walks or grab a healthy snack without feeling rushed. Order healthier food options when catering a meal: When ordering food for employees, be conscious of what you order. Skip the pizza (even though it’s easy) and go for boxed salads and wraps. Promote chair exercises: Here are 10 exercises from Diabetes Forecast that you can post in the office to help employees stay active while sitting. Stock healthy snack options: Keep fresh fruit, protein shakes, sparkling water, and other healthy treats on hand. If these are available, people will be less likely to spend money on other snacks, like chips or candy. Schedule speakers to raise awareness: Touch base with your local American Diabetes Association®, hospital systems, or other organizations to see if professionals can speak on health topics relevant to your employees, like prediabetes or proper nutrition. To alleviate the scheduling burden, ask the speaker to do multiple, shorter presentations on the scheduled day; this will allow more employees to hear the educational information. You can even cater a healthy lunch for those who attend a presentation to increase participation. Create a guide to healthy food options nearby: Survey restaurants close to the office and create a digital catalog of healthy options at each location. It could be as simple as a Word document with each restaurant name, address, and 2-3 healthier options individuals can order.

4 Communication pieces The remainder of this toolkit includes customizable posters, a table tent, and an infographic that you can use to increase awareness about prediabetes and promote your wellness programing. Other resources to increase awareness include: Justin Clarke’s testimonial about the importance of screening and following up on health risks Kylee McAlister’s testimonial about the importance of knowing your numbers and reversing prediabetes The Health & Wellness blog for posts you can share with your employees about prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and general well-being The American Diabetes Association® Stop Work program Diabetes and prediabetes fact sheets from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
