2. Formation of Soil
Soil- mixture of weathered rock, decayed organic matter, mineral fragments, water and air
How Soil Forms:
Rain water breaks down rocks
Plants grow, weathering rock further
Insect waste adds organic matter
Organic matter enriches the ground, creating rich topsoil

3. Composition of Soil
Humus- decayed organic matter that turns into dark-colored material
Most organic matter comes from plants (leaves, stems, roots) animal waste and dead animals

4. Soil Profile Horizon A (topsoil) Horizon B (subsoil) Horizon C
Contains lots of humus, which makes Horizon A the darkest layer
Contains weathered rocks, minerals
Less humus, light in color and less fertile
Partially weathered rocks and minerals
