1 TENURE AND PROMOTION IN ECAS
Orientation for Faculty & Chairs Carla Freeman, Sr. Associate Dean of Faculty Dwight Duffus, T & P Committee Chair

2 TENURE & PROMOTION IN ECAS
Emory hires faculty we intend to tenure and promote to full professor. Tenure and Promotion review = part of the faculty development process more generally. Mentorship within and outside the department. For Departments without a formal system of mentoring (research, teaching and service) now is the time to establish one. Clarity and transparency about expectations (research, teaching, service) and frequent feedback via annual merit review with chair and other mentors.

3 THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF TENURE & PROMOTION
Principles and Procedures for Tenure & Promotion Guidelines for Submitting Materials (available on the ECAS website) Pretenure review (3rd/4th year) Tenure review (6th year) Promotion to Full Professor (generally 6-8 years hence) Promotion to Full Professor of Long Term Associate Professors (sec C)

4 EXTERNAL REVIEW LETTERS
Pre-tenure: 6 names - Dean’s office solicits 2 letters Both Tenure & Promotion to Full: 15 names – Dean’s Office solicits 6 letters (Peer institutions; Full Professors; exceptions: explain) Reviewer Biographies and Conflict of Interest: Title & Rank, clear description of expertise and explicit disclosure of the nature of relationship between candidate and reviewer. NO collaborators, co-authors, former teachers, former students, etc. Department can contribute 2 names in addition to the candidate. Generalists as well as sub-field experts; in cases of interdisciplinary scholarship, clustering groups of external reviewer names by sub-field/discipline The earlier these lists are submitted in May, the better success in yielding best reviewers for the candidate.

5 DEPARTMENTAL REVIEW All tenured faculty members participate in pre-tenure and tenure reviews; for promotion to full professor, all full professors participate in review. Research & Teaching Excellence Departments establish clear expectations; see new tenure guidelines for examples of evidence of excellence in teaching. Service: satisfactory/unsatisfactory; some service beyond the department for tenure, and more substantial (College, University, Profession) for Full Voting process; summary letter encapsulating the outside letters, the discussion, and the vote; new template for department chairs.

6 TENURE & PROMOTION COMMITTEE
3 Full Profs from each Division: Natural Sci, Social Sci, Humanities. Department chair and advocate (if requested by candidate) Designated rep from candidate’s division to present the case and usher the letter writing; Review the full file (research, teaching, service), department letter, external letters; vote; summary letter to the Dean of ECAS. Candidate statements on research and teaching are read very closely; get feedback in advance.

7 FINAL STEPS Tenure and Promotion steps:
Dean reviews the full candidate file, the recommendation of the T&P Committee, Department letter, external reviews. When the case is favorable, he writes a letter recommending tenure/promotion to the Provost; the case goes to the Tenure & Promotion Advisory Committee (TPAC). President and BOT review.

Is this candidate contributing to the service and citizenship of the Department/ College / University / Profession?
