The French and Indian War
Sequence of events……….

Britain and France both settled in North America They argued over how to make use of the land (specifically, the Ohio River Valley) The British wanted to farm. So, they began cutting down trees in order to make more room for crops The French worried that cutting down trees would cause animals to run away. The French needed these animals in order to continue their fur trading businesses! Tensions grew!!!!! How did the Native Americans chose sides?

By 1753, the problems between the French and British continued to grow George Washington (British officer) asked the French to leave the Ohio River Valley Obviously, the French refused…. George Washington and his crew decided to attack Fort Duquesne in order to claim the land They were easily defeated by the French This was the first battle of The French and Indian War!

1755 Despite their initial loss, the British were determined to capture Fort Duquesne Unfortunately, they were defeated once again by the French More than 1,400 British troops were killed The French became allies with Native Americans known as the Wyandot

1758 With the help of William Pitt (British leader), the British were finally able to capture Fort Duquesne They renamed it “Fort Pitt” Why do you think the British renamed the fort?

1759 The British then decided to drive the French out of Canada They successfully seized Quebec after three months of fighting with the French! 1760 Next, the British captured Montreal and had successfully driven the French out of Canada!

1763 With the fall of Montreal, the French and Indian War ended The French and British agreed to the Treaty of Paris. A treaty is a peace agreement According to the Treaty of Paris, Great Britain claimed all of France’s colonies in North America Great Britain issued the Proclamation of 1763 because they could not provide protection for settlers in the Ohio River Valley The Proclamation stated that settlers could not move past the Appalachian Mountains and that this land would be set aside for Native Americans This made colonists mad!
