Grammar Pattern of the Week
An action verb (tell, hit, yell) tells what action someone or something is performing. A linking verb (is, are) does not show action. For the week: (Underline each verb and label it action or linking.) Sentence: Joe scored an A on his quiz and was ecstatic.

Narrative Techniques Take out your sheet of paper titled “Narrative Techniques” from last week. Glue the sheet of paper I am giving you under the headline. These are more literary terms for you!

Homework: Choose one of the following: Draw a four panel comic introducing the basic situation of your summer reading. (Include characters, setting, and the conflict) Write a 6 – 8 sentence paragraph describing the Plot, Setting, Characters, and Conflict (internal and external) of your summer reading.

Day 6: After School When the school day ends, students should move to their cars or buses quickly, unless they are participating in supervised after school activities. Teachers have tutorials at least one day after school. The Media Center is open until 5:00pm on Mondays & Wednesdays. Grimsley Perk (peer tutorial) will start when late buses start. Late buses will start running Mon – Thurs. in a few weeks.

What it looks like: You’ll read self-selected materials silently for 20 minutes You need to bring one book, magazine, newspaper, etc. to read for the entire 20 minutes The whole class participates Teachers will also be reading silently for majority of the time Teachers will have conversations with you about what you’re reading A timer will be set for 20 minutes – no need to stare at the clock! No reports or records are kept

Narrator and Voice Narrator: the person telling the story
Omniscient POV: narrator is not a character in the story, able to tell us everything about everyone including thoughts and feelings Third person limited POV: narrator zooms in on one person but talks about them as he or she First person POV: narrator talks to us, using I; can be unreliable

Draw a picture of how the picture and quote makes you feel and write two sentences explaining the picture Write a paragraph describing how the picture and quote make you feel.

Directions Before you fill out your graphic organizer, we will have a quiet discussion. There are 6 papers around the room. You will use markers or post its at each station to respond to the questions or respond to other people’s answers.

Ticket out the Door On the bottom of your sheet, number from 1 to 3. Read the following excerpt and answer the questions. What Point of View is present here? Why do you think so?
