2 New Volunteers - The bus companies refused to carry the CORE freedom riders any further -SNCC volunteers in Nashville were ready to pick up where the others had left off -When they got to Birmingham, police pulled them over and beat them, then took them to Tennessee but, bus driver was to scared for his life to keep driving -Riders occupied a white’s only waiting room until solution was reached - 18 hours

3 One American’s Story and Riding for Freedom
-James Peck and other freedom riders hoped provoking violence would convince Kennedy to enforce law -Racists would beat Black and White Freedom Riders -Freedom Rider’s bus #2 went southward to suprise Kennedy - 200 angry whites attacked bus #2 tossing a fire bomb and breaking the windows

4 Standing Firm Standing Firm
September 1962 James Meredith won federal case court that allowed him to enroll in a white University of Mississipi. Pres.Kennedy ordered Federal Marshals to escort the Meredith to the registrar’s office. September 30th ,riots broke out on campus,resulting in 2 deaths.Took thousands of soldiers,200 arrest and 20 hours of stop the rioters.

5 Arrival of the federal Marshals
Alabama officials had promised Kennedy that the riders would be protected ,mob of whites Violence provoked exactly the response the freedom riders wanted.Newspaper throughout the nation denounced the beatings. pres.Kennedy arranged to give freedom riders direct support.The Justice Department sent 400 Us Marshals to protect the riders on the last part of their journey.

6 Integrating Ole Miss When president Kennedy ordered federal marshals to escort Meredith. The broad cast turned out white demonstrators On September 30, riots broke out on campus 200 soldiers got arrest , and it took 15hrs to stop the riots The federal officials accompanied Meredith to class and protected his parents from night riders

7 Heading Into Birmingham
The Trouble of the Riots continued in Alabama 18 Bombings from 1957 to 1963 On April 3, 1963 the King flew into Birmingham to hold a meeting with the African American Community about .. “They Had to all Stick Together” The King and a small band of marches were finally arrested during a demonstration on good friday. While the king was in jail he wrote an open letter to white religious leaders.

On April 20, King posted bail and began planning more demonstrations. May 2, more than a thousand African-American children marched in Birmingham; Police commissioner Eugene “Bull” Connor’s men arrested 959 of them. May 3, a second “children’s crusade” came face to face with a helmeted police force.

9 Kennedy Takes A Stand On June 11, 1963, the president sent troops to force Governor George Wallace to honor a court order desegregating the University of Alabama Kennedy demanded that Congress pass a civil rights bill. Shortly after midnight, a sniper murdered Medgar Evers. Police soon arrested a white supremacist, Byron de la Beckwith, but he was released after two trials resulted in hung juries.
