Tobacco Tobacco users have difficulty quitting because contains an addictive drug. All tobacco products contain nicotine the addictive drug found in tobacco leaves. Nicotine is a stimulant, a drug that increases the actions of the central nervous system, the heart, and other organs.

Poisonous Substances in Tobacco Smoke
Carcinogen – a cancer-causing substance Tar – a thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns. The tar damages a smoker’s respiratory system by paralyzing and destroying cilia. Carbon monoxide – a colorless, odorless and poisonous gas. It increases the risk of high blood pressure, hear disease, hardening of the arteries, and other circulatory problem.

Breathing like A Smoker
Everyone stand up and perform 10 Jumping Jacks. Feel your pulse and take into account how heavy you are breathing Each Student will now receive a straw. Practice breathing through the straw (Pinch your nose so you can only breathe through mouth) Everyone will perform 10 Jumping Jacks. Try breathing through the straws again. Smoking damages your lungs; therefore, a smoker’s breathing can be like breathing through a straw after physical activity.

Short-Term Brain chemistry changes. Respiration and heart rate increase. Taste bud are dulled and appetite is reduced. Users have bad breath, yellowed teeth, and smelly hair, skin, and clothes. Long Term Chronic bronchitis Emphysema - condition in which lungs lose their ability to absorb oxygen Lung Cancer Coronary heart disease and stroke A weakened immune system

Cost of using Tobacco Cost to society – Tobacco-related illnesses cost the United States about $167 billion each year. Cost to individuals – A person smoking one pack of cigarettes a day will spend about $3,561 a year on the habit. Legal consequences – Selling tobacco products to individuals under the age of 18 illegal. Using tobacco products on school property may lead to suspension or expulsion.
