1 CHEMISTRY November 12, 2014 ELECTRONS

2 SCIENCE STARTER Read the Science starter and annotate the text. Make sure to indicate in your annotation where you found the answer to the question/prompt. You have 5 minutes to complete the Science Starter. You are seated and silent

3 ANNOUNCEMENT Final Day to do Quiz 2-1 – Makeup HW03 HW04

4 PROGRESS REPORT I NEED ALL HOMEWORKS BY WEDNESDAY IF YOU WANT IT TO SHOW UP ON YOUR PROGRESS REPORTS ALL LABS NEED TO BE FINISHED LAB 04 – RUTHERFORD LAB 05 – CANDIUM LAB 06 - ISOTOPES

5 ASSESSMENT HW05 IS ONLINE.
HOMEWORK ASSESSMENT HW05 IS ONLINE. YOU WILL HAVE 3 CHANCES TO TAKE THE ASSESSMENT

6 How many colors can neon produce?
AIM/GUIDING QUESTION How many colors can neon produce?

7 CLAIM Neon can produce _____________________ color(s).

8 GOALS FOR VIDEO The answer to complete the claim
Evidence to support your claim

9 SCIENCE JUSTIFICATION
TAKE 1 MINUTE TO WRITE DOWN YOUR JUSTIFICATION FOR YOUR EVIDENCE. Your justification must be based on the science starter and the class discussion we had in previous classes.

10 ELECTRON WKSHT TAKE 2 MINUTES TO READ THE 8 FACTS GIVEN ON THE WORKSHEET

11 ELECTRON WKSHT (1) Each electron has its own distinct amount of energy. The electrons reside in the electron cloud. The electron cloud is divided into energy levels (also known as shells). The lowest energy level is closest to the nucleus.

12 ELECTRON WKSHT (2) Electrons are naturally in ground state (lowest energy state). When a specific amount of energy is absorbed (gain), the electron moves to a higher energy state (excited state). Example – jumps from 2nd energy level to 3rd energy level. The excited state is temporary. After a specific amount of energy is released (emitted), the electrons return to a lower energy state.

13 ELECTRON WKSHT (3) Bright line spectrum is emitted when the electrons release energy and return to a lower energy state. In other words, light is emitted when electrons return from a higher energy state to a lower energy state.

14 ELECTRON WKSHT (4) Electron Configuration represents the distribution of all electrons for an element. The electron configuration shown on the periodic table is at ground state. Adding the number shown in the electron configuration will give the number of electrons for an element. Example: = 11 electrons
