REBOUNDING Rule 4.36 Rebounding is defined as – “An attempt by any player to secure possession of the ball during and following a try or tap for goal.” The principles governing rebound play are the same as those governing guarding and verticality Rebounding principles apply to the offense and defense A player must first obtain legal position and then maintain that position Often times – the defensive rebounder had already obtained legal position by guarding his opponent prior to the attempt for goal. If so, the position may be maintained

OBTAINING/MAINTAINING LEGAL POSITION
REBOUNDING Rule 4.36 OBTAINING/MAINTAINING LEGAL POSITION To obtain/maintain legal rebound position, a player may NOT: Displace, charge or push an opponent Extend shoulders, hips, knees or extend arms/elbows fully or partially into a position other than vertical, that hinders the freedom of movement of an opponent when contact with arms/elbows occurs Bend his body in an abnormal position to hold or displace an opponent Violate the principle of verticality

REBOUNDING Rule 4.36 NOTES Every player is entitled to any spot on the floor, provided the player get there first and does so legally Some incidental contact may occur: Apply the rule Pushing, leaning, shoving and holding must be enforced When illegal contact is not enforced, it lends to advantages, roughness and injury Contact breeds contact, which breeds more severe contact There is no team or player control during rebound play “Over-the-back” is NOT a foul – “On-the-Back” is a foul
