News and Notes Perfection Award: 3rd, 4th for being absolutely amazing yesterday and mastering an objective in 30 minutes. HAND IN YESTERDAY’S GUIDED NOTES/PRACTICE PROBLEMS and extra credit if you have it BULLDOG TOMORROW! Still need to take PLAN/ACT: Osvaldo, Bradley, Erick, Whitney

Agile Mind Exploration
A surveillance helicopter reports a grass fire to the central dispatcher. The dispatcher locates the fire on a grid map and determines that the fire is 8 miles due east and 11 miles due north from the central dispatch office.
5
Which distances do we know?
X goes from 2 to 8 (leg) Y goes from 3 to 11 (leg) Which do we want to find out? We want distance from station to fire (hypotenuse) c 8 6
6
Method 1: Pythagorean Thm.
a = 6, b = 8, c = ??? = c2 = c2 100 = c2 c 8 6
7
Method 2: Distance Formula
“D” for distance 11 – 3 = 8 8 – 2 = 6
8
In your vocabulary… Distance Formula
2 points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). Distance between them is: No drawing NOW TRY THE NEXT EXAMPLE ON YOUR OWN. USE THE DISTANCE FORMULA TO SOLVE IT!!!!!! REMEMBER YOUR ORDER OF OPERATIONS
9
One more example: Point P has coordinates (1,3). Point Q has coordinates (25,10). How long is segment PQ? Once you finish this, begin the next activity. Read the directions!!!
