How to Annotate 6th Grade Language Arts
Article of the Week AOW How to Annotate 6th Grade Language Arts
2
What is Article of the Week? (AOW)
1. At the beginning of each week, you will receive an article to read. 2. You will have to read the article, make comments on it, and complete the article activities. 3. Both the article and the activities are always due Friday.
3
AOW: Write on it? You will be learning how to “annotate” an article.
Active readers do this. It simply means to “take notes on the text.”
4
Why annotate? Annotating helps you Stay focused while you read!
Involve you with your text! Monitor and improve your comprehension.
5
How to Annotate While you are reading the Article of the Week (A.O.W.)
Circle words that are unfamiliar and define them using context clues Write comments that show you understand the text Write questions that show what you are wondering
6
What else should I write on my AOW?
Short summaries in the margin at the end of a chunk of text. Draw symbols to represent important ideas in the text. Make connections to other texts you’ve read or things you’ve experienced.
7
Turning in your Article of the Week (AOW)
On Fridays, you will submit the article and the questions. Your teacher will check your annotating: How much did you write on the text (A.o.W)? How much thinking is shown in the annotating?
8
Turning in your Article of the Week (AOW)
As a general rule: The more quality writing on the text and in the margins, the better the grade. Neatness counts! If your teacher can’t read your annotating, then there is a problem.
9
Turning in your Article of the Week (AOW)
What can bring this grade down? Not turning it in. (A.o.W.) is a weekly, major grade which significantly affects your overall Language Arts grade.)
10
Turning in your Article of the Week (AOW)
What can bring this grade down? Turning in a weak product that is barely annotated. Why bother doing anything if you don’t put forth your best effort? You are annotating because you need to! You are doing what “good readers” do!
11
Turning in your Article of the Week (AOW)
What can bring this grade down? Doing only one part of the A.o.W. (Your grade reflects your effort. Doing partial work will earn you partial credit, like a 50 percent.)
12
Turning in your Article of the Week (AOW)
What can bring this grade down? Writing anything at the last minute before the assignment is due. You should be working on the article each night for homework! Do not wait until Thursday night to do the article!
