Factors Leading to War Imperialism – competition for colonies
Militarism -stockpiling of weapons -building a strong military Nationalism- to act in the country’s own national interest. -extreme pride and loyalty in one’s nation. Alliances- European nations began forming military alliances with one another to maintain a balance of power. (We got each other’s back)

**The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie of Austria-Hungary by an organization called the Black Hand of Serbia was the spark that led to World War I. -Austria-Hungary had control of a region called Bosnia. -Serbia once controlled Bosnia and wants the region back. -The heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary plans a visit with his wife to Bosnia. -The Black Hand of Serbia, which is funded by some government officials in Serbia manages to shoot Franz Ferdinand and his wife while in Bosnia. -Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

-Austria-Hungary finds out the plot included Serbia’s government and puts demands on Serbia. -Serbia refuses the demands. -Serbia had an alliance with Russia so it declares war on Austria- Hungary. -Austria-Hungary had an alliance with Germany, so it declares war on Serbia. -Then Germany declares war on France. -France had an alliance with Britain, so Britain declares war on Germany. -Germany also had an alliance with the Ottoman Empire so it joins the war too.

World War I Statistics -was called the Great War until the start of WWII -lasted from -15 million people were killed during battle. -millions more will die from starvation and epidemics. -new weapons and ways of fighting were introduced.

Two Truths and a Lie: Alliances between nations made what should have been a conflict between two nations turn to war. Germany was the first nation to declare war on Serbia before turning against France. The Black Hand of Serbia was responsible for the death of Franz Ferdinand because his nation controlled Bosnia.

text messaging. Write a series of text messages between two nations, people, or groups concerning the beginning of WWI. Examples: -messages between two alliances -two people living within a nation about to go to war -two people from different nations about to go to war -two members of the Black Hand of Serbia
