I. A Country Divided A. 1945: US & Soviets want to spread influence to Korea B. UN decides to split country at 38th Parallel 1. Two countries form, N. Korea & S. Korea a. US sends money to S. Korea b. Soviets send weapons to N. Korea’s leader Kim Il-Sung C. Stalin encourages Kim to invade S. Korea, says don’t worry about Truman 1. June 25th, 1950: N. Korea invades S. Korea 2. S. Korea turns to the UN for help D. When Soviets are absent, UN votes to use troops in Korea

A. As N. Korean troops retreated, MacArthur pushed on to the Yalu River B. Mao is worried sends Peoples Lib Army into N. Korea & pushes UN troops back into S. Kor. C. MacArthur counterattacks but asks Truman to use A-bomb & invade China 1. Truman refuses, “Can’t expand the war” + Soviets have bomb now D. MacArthur goes behind the President’s back, so Truman fires him 1. Truman loses public support due to length of war and for firing the popular MacArthur E. 1953: Eisenhower becomes President F. Fighting continues to go back & forth G. Armistice agreement is signed after both sides are behind 38th parallel, no peace treaty!
