Old kingdom Rulers The period of the Old Kingdom began about 2600 BC
Egyptians built cities& expanded trade. The Egyptian kings, called Pharaohs, lived with their families in Palaces.

Old kingdom Rulers Pharaoh- was the all powerful ruler
His word was law. Pharaohs appointed many officials to carry out their wishes for: Irrigation canals Grain storage Made sure crops planted Controlled trade Collected taxes

Old kingdom Rulers Reasons why Egyptians were willing to serve their Pharaoh: They believed the unity of the kingdom depended on a strong ruler. They saw the Pharaoh as the son of Re, the sun god. Egyptians thought the Pharaoh was a god on earth and controlled Egypt’s welfare.

Egyptian Religion Religion was deeply woven into Egyptian culture.
The Egyptians worshipped many deities, or gods & goddesses. They believed these deities controlled the forces of nature.

Egyptian Religion The main god was Re, the Sun god.
The god of the Nile was Hapi. The most important goddess was Isis, representing the loyal mother & wife who ruled with Osiris.
