3 Old kingdom Rulers The period of the Old Kingdom began about 2600 BC
Egyptians built cities& expanded trade. The Egyptian kings, called Pharaohs, lived with their families in Palaces.

4 Old kingdom Rulers Pharaoh- was the all powerful ruler
His word was law. Pharaohs appointed many officials to carry out their wishes for: Irrigation canals Grain storage Made sure crops planted Controlled trade Collected taxes

5 Old kingdom Rulers Reasons why Egyptians were willing to serve their Pharaoh: They believed the unity of the kingdom depended on a strong ruler. They saw the Pharaoh as the son of Re, the sun god. Egyptians thought the Pharaoh was a god on earth and controlled Egypt’s welfare.

6 Egyptian Religion Religion was deeply woven into Egyptian culture.
The Egyptians worshipped many deities, or gods & goddesses. They believed these deities controlled the forces of nature.

8 Egyptian Religion The main god was Re, the Sun god.
The god of the Nile was Hapi. The most important goddess was Isis, representing the loyal mother & wife who ruled with Osiris.
