1 What are sources of energy?
Lesson 1 What are sources of energy?

2 Vocabulary Energy- the ability to do work
Stored Energy- can change into a form that can do work

3 What is Energy? Energy makes things move, stretch, or grow
Energy causes changes in materials Earth gets heat and light energy from the Sun

4 Stored Energy Stored energy is in batteries, fuel, and food
Stored energy changes to motion, light, and heat when it is released

5 Energy stored in Batteries
Batteries store energy and a flashlight uses batteries for energy A substance changes inside a battery and energy is released That energy changes to light When there is no more energy stored, the flashlight stops working

6 Energy from Fuel Energy is stored in fuels, too
Coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline are types of fuel Each of these fuels have stored energy in them When the fuel is burned, energy is released Energy stored in fuel can change to heat and light People who use stoves or ovens in their home are using natural gas

7 Energy From Food Energy is stored in the food that you eat
Your body breaks down food when you eat it Some of the energy released goes to your muscles You use energy to grow, work, and play Energy stored in food can change to motion and heat

8 What are some ways that energy changes form?
Lesson 2 What are some ways that energy changes form?

9 Vocabulary Energy of motion- the energy carried by moving objects
Friction- what changes energy of motion into heat energy

10 Changing Forms of Energy
Energy is constantly changing from one form to another An object that moves faster has more energy of motion Machines change energy from one form to another A car engine burns gasoline; the energy stored in the gasoline changes to energy of motion and this is what makes the wheels turn

11 Forms of Energy Chemical energy holds the particles of matter together
Electrical energy moves through special wires into our homes and thats what makes appliances work Light energy comes from the Sun Thermal energy you feel as heat; it makes the particles of matter move faster

12 Transfer of Motion Energy can be transferred or moved from one object to another When a marble hits another marble, the first marble transfers its energy to the second marble. This is why the first marble slows down Energy is never lost

13 Motion and Heat There is friction between a moving object and another object that it touches Friction changes energy of motion into heat energy Friction slows down moving objects Rubbing your hands together causes friction

14 What are some ways energy moves?
Lesson 3 What are some ways energy moves?

15 Vocabulary Compression wave- a wave that carries energy by squeezing particles together and then letting them spread open

16 Water Waves Energy moves in waves
Water waves in the ocean carry energy forward Only the energy moves forward; the water does not move forward A small wave carries a small amount of energy A large wave carries a large amount of energy

17 Sound Waves and Hearing Sound
Sound waves carry energy forward The energy moves through the air Sound waves=compression waves(push together; spread apart) Ex: a bell It vibrates when it rings and pushes air particles together Then the air particles spread apart and the sound makes waves The sound waves reach your ear and you hear the sound

18 Earthquakes Earthquakes cause 3 kinds of waves
Part of the energy moves like sound waves The energy pushes the ground and the ground moves back Another part of the energy moves like water waves The energy shakes the ground up and down The third kind of wave shakes the ground from side to side Earthquakes have the greatest amount of energy near the place where they start and this is where the most damage occurs They lose energy as they travel further away

19 Where does electricity come from?
Lesson 4 Where does electricity come from?

20 Vocabulary Electricity- electrical energy that moves through wires

21 Electrical Energy Electricity is electrical energy that moves through wires Electricity is used everyday How does it get to your home? First, power plants use fuels, water, wind, or nuclear power to produce, or make, electricity Then the electricity travels through special wires in the form of electrical currents The wires go from the power plant to your home In your home , the electricity is changed into heat, light, and motion

22 Sources of Electricity
Electricity makes many things work in your home People use different kinds of energy to produce, or make, electricity Moving water creates energy that is changed into electricity Heat energy from burning fuel is changed into electricity Nuclear reactors use nuclear power to produce electricity Sunlight and wind are also used to produce electricity
