1 Physical Science Ch. 10: Waves

2 A wave is a disturbance in matter that carries energy from one place to another.
mechanical waves – created when a source of energy causes a vibration to travel through a medium. A medium is a material through which a wave travels (solid, liquid, gas)

3 Types of Mechanical Waves
Based on the way they move, there are 3 types of mechanical waves: 1. Transverse Waves 2. Longitudinal (Compressional Waves) 3. Surface Waves

4 Transverse Waves Causes the medium to vibrate at right angles to the direction in which the wave travels. Ex. ocean waves, light waves For example, as the wave moves left to right, the medium moves up and down.

5 Say you're waterskiing down at the lake and you wipe out
Say you're waterskiing down at the lake and you wipe out. As you float in the water and a wave goes by, what does your body do as the wave passes?

7 Sound waves What is a wave?
Sound waves What is a wave? You can make a simple wave on a piece of rope or elastic. Imagine the rope stretched between two people – Colin and Joanne. If Colin shakes the end of the rope, then the shake travels down the rope. If he does three shakes, then all three of them travel along the rope. So he can send a message or energy to Joanne by shaking the rope. He did this using a wave (picture 1). Picture 1. Colin can make a wave travel down the rope.

9 Parts of a Transverse Wave
4 main parts to a transverse wave: Crest- the highest point Trough- the lowest point

10 Amplitude- the distance from either the crest or trough to the resting point of the wave

11 Wavelength- distance from crest to crest or trough to trough on a wave
