1 IDEAS AROUND DEBATING POLITICS & SOCIETY

2 Work Flow Pre-teaching and introductory research to topic In-class activities Debate Opposition Pieces Theorists (reading and further discussion)

3 Record Sheet for Debates
Start of debate, students record their initial position on the topic. During the debate, students record points of interest, both pro- and anti- their initial position. At end of the debate, students record their final position, regardless of whether it has changed as a result of the debate or not. They will then be asked to write an opposition piece to their final position, to allow them formulate a well-rounded argument, after which the theorists will be introduced to the discussion.

6 ROLES WITHIN THE DEBATE
The Moderator/Facilitator - does not take part in the discussion but must still fill in the debate record sheet - ensures everyone has a say, that no one person dominates the debate and asks questions to help flesh out ideas without making judgement The Listener - must listen carefully and fill in the debate record sheet without saying a word throughout the whole process - help curb those students that may otherwise dominate a debate - help students really learn to listen - allow students the experience of being the disenfranchised voice

7 The Advocate - participates in the debate as normal - can take notes from the Listener or read over their debate record sheet to get a sense of their position - can then make points on behalf of the Listener without verbal contact - help students get a sense of advocacy and how the message can sometimes change or be miscommunicated as it works its way through channels towards government policy The Moderator, Listener and Advocate roles are rotated so all students experience each one. Students will be asked to write a brief reflection of being in each role to help them process and evaluate the experience.

8 Visitor’s chair The Visitor - class times can be shared with the Principle, Vice-Principle and all teaching staff so they can be encouraged to drop in and participate in the discussion - invited guests e.g. local politicians can also be invited to join in (may be useful to link in with TY co-ordinator for relevant guest speakers) - may add fresh perspective, life experience etc. to the discussion while teaching students the importance of their voice in any debate - teaching staff in particular could be helpful in giving feedback and suggestions for the class, as many of us will be a department of one
