Copy the following terms and definitions. Keep them under the Writing Process tab of your binder. Paraphrase-Putting whatever you are reading into your own words. Summarize-Putting the main idea(s) into your own words (less detailed than paraphrase). Direct Quote-Identical to the original source.

On a separate sheet of paper…
Paraphrase lines Be sure to parenthetically cite! The best way to paraphrase is to read the section of text, then flip the paper over so you are not tempted to look, and from memory, write down what you remember reading.

On the same paper… Directly quote Lines (“The event…friend.”) Be sure to parenthetically cite! Remember, a direct quote is copied EXACTLY as it is written by the author!

On the same paper… Summarize the passage from Emma. Be sure to parenthetically cite! Remember, a summary is just the main idea(s) of the text!
