Defining the vocabulary
GIS: Esri online GIS dictionary: GIS: wiki.GIS.com: Also important to have a dictionary covering the concerned thematic area (Malaria, MNH,…)
3
Definition for some terms we used these past days
Map: A drawing of the Earth's surface, or part of that surface, showing the shape and position of different countries, political borders, natural features such as rivers and mountains, and artificial features such as roads and buildings Physical Geography: The study of the natural features of the Earth, such as mountains and rivers Geospatial/Spatial data: information about the locations and shapes of geographic features and the relationships between them, usually stored as coordinates and topology Geographic data: Information describing the location and attributes of things, including their shapes and representation. Geographic data is the composite of spatial data and attribute data. Geographic Information: Spatial and/or geographic data organized and presented to create some value and to answer questions Geographic Information System (GIS): An integrated collection of computer software and data used to view and manage information about geographic places, analyze spatial relationships, and model spatial processes

Thematic mapping is part of the HIS geo-enabling framework
Used across levels Region/States contributing to its correctness and regular update Maintained at the central level and used by the whole health sector Developed in collaboration with all stakeholders and maintained at the central level Maintained across levels Central level
5
The vision behind the geo-enablement of the HIS
Passing from this… …to this Each information system is using a different geography and not being able benefiting from the power of geospatial data and technologies All the information systems use the same geography which does not only reduce duplication of efforts but also allow using geography as a common neutral integrating platform across programs
