Catholic Church was corrupt (worried more about money than religion) indulgences - certificate that could be bought to forgive sins Catholic Church did not focus enough attention on the Bible

justification by faith - faith in Jesus is the only requirement to be saved (go to Heaven) the Catholic Church taught a person needed faith AND “works” (special acts of goodness/following church rules)

Martin Luther October 31, 1517, Luther posts 95 Theses (statements) on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany criticizing the Catholic Church with the help of the printing press, Luther’s ideas spread rapidly, and many join the Lutheran movement
