indulgences - certificate that could be bought to forgive sins
Catholic Church did not focus enough attention on the Bible

justification by faith - faith in Jesus is the only requirement to be saved (go to Heaven)
the Catholic Church taught a person needed faith AND “works” (special acts of goodness/following church rules)

with the help of the printing press, Luther’s ideas spread rapidly, and many join the Lutheran movement
