7 Martin Luther’s Beliefs
Catholic Church was corrupt (worried more about money than religion) indulgences - certificate that could be bought to forgive sins Catholic Church did not focus enough attention on the Bible

8 Martin Luther’s Beliefs
justification by faith - faith in Jesus is the only requirement to be saved (go to Heaven) the Catholic Church taught a person needed faith AND “works” (special acts of goodness/following church rules)

9 Martin Luther October 31, 1517, Luther posts 95 Theses (statements) on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany criticizing the Catholic Church with the help of the printing press, Luther’s ideas spread rapidly, and many join the Lutheran movement

10 John Calvin, Henry VIII, and others create their own Protestant Religions

13 2 Big Goals: Get people who joined the Protestant movement to come back to the Catholic faith Make sure nobody else left the Catholic faith

clarify their beliefs and teachings so people would understand them better

15 Council of Trent meeting of Catholic leaders to discuss Church reforms and clarify teachings

16 Council of Trent no more indulgences (stop abuses)
teachings stay the same Eg: faith AND good works to get to Heaven

17 Ignatius of Loyola starts group called the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)
worked to spread Catholic ideas throughout the world (missionary)

obviously, it was not 100% successful, but it did help the Catholic Church
