2. Nursery Rhyme Activity
Nursery rhymes are often based on true (and often gruesome!) historical events.
(1) Ring around the rosie - Victims of the plague would develop a red rash.
(2) Pockets full of posie - Believing the plague was spread through the air by its bad smells, people would carry flowers in their pockets to dispel the bad smells.
(3) Ashes, ashes - In an attempt to stop the plague from spreading, the bodies of the victims of the plague were burned
(4) We all fall down! - 33% of the population of Europe was struck down by the plague

3. Nursery Rhyme Activity
Working with a partner – on one sheet of paper - Your assignment is to write a nursery rhyme on your choice of either the Black Plague, the Crusades, or the Hundred Years War. When you are finished, staple the rhyme to the back of this sheet. You will be graded as follows:

Survivors of plague could demand higher wages
Merchants had few opportunities to expand business so they pursued art

A wealthy merchant developed in each Italian city-state
Merchants dominated politics

Had branch offices all throughout Italy and Europe
Cosimo de Medici was the wealthiest European of his time
Grandson Lorenzo de Medici became great patron of the arts
Patron: someone who financially supports an artist or the arts

Renaissance artists looked down on the art and literature of the Middle Ages
Instead they wanted to revive the learning of the Greeks and Romans
Ruins of Rome were nearby
Many Greek manuscripts made their way to Rome via Christian scholars

12. The Renaissance Classical and Worldly Views
As scholars studied manuscripts, they became more influenced by classical ideas.
This lead to:
Humanism: an intellectual movement that focused more on human potential and achievements
Popularized the study of history, literature, and philosophy (all are known as humanities)
Worldly pleasure: Humanists suggested that a person could enjoy life without offending God
Ex. Wealthy could enjoy material luxuries, good music, and fine foods

Renaissance Man: One strove to be a master in every area of study
Expected to be charming, witty, and well educated in the classics
Also should be a skilled rider, wrestler, and swordsman
Renaissance Woman: Upper-class women should know the classics and be charming

Little influence in politics

When filming, no interrupting other classes – must be quiet in the hallways – can film in the cafeteria commons, media center conference rooms, or in the workrooms
Once you finish filming – come back to the room (shouldn’t take longer than 15 – 20 minutes)

Write one paragraph about his life; use your notes from yesterday to explain how the artist you chose is a Renaissance man – mention some of the artists’ most famous works
Write one paragraph about yourself – how are you a Renaissance man or woman? What things are you good at and enjoy participating in – out of all these things – which one do you think is your best? Explain why you chose the one that you did.
