About the Newbery Medal
The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. Given out every year since 1922 it is the oldest, and best known children’s book award. One book receives the Newbery Medal and ‘runners up’ are chosen for the Newbery Honor.

Criteria for the award It is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published by an American publisher in the United States. The award is for the writing and contribution to American Literature. It must be an original work. All types of writing, including fiction, nonfiction and poetry can be considered. It must be a book for which children aged up to and including 14 years old are an intended potential audience. The book displays respect for children’s understandings, abilities, and appreciations.

Purpose of the award To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels.
