Beech Acres’ Service Philosophy
10
What is a service philosophy?
11
Did you Know? It is meant to be a working document that leads all staff in their contact with clients, customers, other staff and other teams. Beech Acres had a clinical team of staff that adopted a philosophy of service in 2000.
12
Beech Acres’ Philosophy of Service
Beech Acres adheres to individualized, family-centered, strength-based service approaches which respect the fundamental dignity of human beings and recognize: That each person has vital insight into self, family and life situation: That human beings and families are resilient; That healthy relationships nurture growth and change; That families, relatives and communities are our allies and best resources.
13
Let’s take a deeper look at each section of our philosophy
Let’s take a deeper look at each section of our philosophy. This is the time to start the journal you printed before.
14
“…that each person has vital insight into self, family and life situation.”
Take a moment to think about how this affects you in your role at the Beech. What does it mean when you come into contact with clients (even if it is in passing)? What does it mean for your contact with other employees?
15
“…that human beings and families are resilient”
Resilient means different things to many people. What does it mean for you? Implied in this message is a sense of hope. How will you impart a sense of hope in your job?
16
“…that healthy relationships nurture growth and change.”
How are the relationships in your work? What else can you do to help them grow and change?
17
“…that families, relatives and communities are our allies and best resources .”
What strengths can you draw on from families, relatives and communities that will build capability? Is there someone at the Beech that could really assist you? Have you asked?
18
Beech Acres services work collaboratively with individuals, families and communities to create a web of support. Through the web of support individuals/families enhance their capabilities to clarify and utilize strengths and resources with the goals of learning, wholeness and healing.
19
The words “strength based” are used a lot at Beech Acres
The words “strength based” are used a lot at Beech Acres. Let’s explore what that means.
20
Service and Treatment modalities congruent with a strength-based philosophy seek:
To observe strengths, listen for strengths, and ask strength-based questions; To emphasize empowerment rather than dependency, by promoting opportunities for individuals/families to capitalize on their strengths; To accurately describe behavior, minimizing the use of labels; To demonstrate progress through measuring the enhancement of the individuals’ strengths and their improved ability to function in the world; To assist individuals/families in generating solutions.
21
Strength-based philosophy
What does strength-based mean? Does it mean that we only say nice things? Or does it mean that we address concerns by looking at the possibilities and strengths that are offered? Do you look for the strengths in clients, families, co-workers? Do you do the work to get it done instead of working collaboratively because it is easier? Do you use catch phrases or labels instead of describing someone or something?
22
We acknowledge that the strengths of individuals, families and communities ultimately resolve issues of concern.
23
We the staff of Beech Acres are committed to upholding the strength-based philosophy through educating, sharing knowledge, challenging each other and coaching of ourselves.
24
We are also committed to collaborating with the community and with other systems in the spirit of empowering and supporting individuals and families.
25
Alright! Now let’s take a look at the what and how of our service model.
26
Beech Acres’ Service Model
27
Service Model: What Beech Acres focuses its energies on partnering with adults who are dedicated to a child’s needs and development. Beech Acres strengthens families for children by building the adults’ ability to access resources to meet their own needs. We call this process Web Weaving and Capability Building.
28
Service Model: What As a Beech Acres employee, are we automatically dedicated to children’s needs and development? How does being dedicated shift your work role? How do you function in your work role in regards to building capability? Do you do your own thing regardless of where your client or team are functioning? Or are you assisting in developing other’s abilities?
29
Service Model: How We build on families’ strengths by following a basic process designed to help dedicated adults develop natural networks of support that provide access to the resources they need when they need them. This process begins with identifying family strengths and needs.
30
