1 CREATE THE NEWS BRAND NEW SCHOOL LINKING PROJECT FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS, supported by Google Innovation Fund Through workshops and production of short films, this schools-based project is working with children to explore multiple perspectives and the nature of propaganda. The outputs will form the basis of an online resource that schools can use in the curriculum to build resilience to extremism.

2 Excitement and motivation for students during the Autumn & Spring terms 2018-19!
Global Education Derby are developing a Key Stage 3+ resource, raising awareness of the digital world and building resilience to fake news and extremist views. We are working with secondary school groups who are participating in a school linking programme where:   Students from contrasting schools work in partnership to create and reflect on short films, developing critical thinking skills Students meet for an end of project event in Derby for a screening of their films

3 DESCRIPTION Working with young people aged years old, in alternative provision settings, giving them the knowledge and skills they need as they begin to interact with social media. A central activity is student workshops scripting and producing short animations to explore multiple perspectives and the nature of propaganda. The students will meet together to share their animations at a showcase event at Derby County Football stadium in Spring 2019.

4 Our aim is to develop skills to think for ourselves and question where the information comes from

5 CREATE THE NEWS! THINK CRITICALLY …

6 OUTCOMES/IMPACT FROM PROJECT
2 teachers will increase their own knowledge, skills and confidence in developing critical literacy skills in their students. 15 young people will have increased their critical thinking skills in order to analyse social media content, identifying fake news, bias and propaganda techniques. A simple PSHE resource will be produced, based on project activity, which can be used to cascade learning within the school community.

7 Capturing Baseline Data
Questionnaire will be completed again at the end of the project .

8 Classroom-based learning

9 Workshops at Quad, Derby
Both schools will work with an artist to create animations to showcase what they have learnt. Animations will address: fake news, filter bubbles, echo chambers, biased writing.

10 Completed animations will be showcased at an end of project event

11 Quotes from the students, after a Quad workshop
“It will be good to do the animation to help people learn about fake news while they enjoy the film at the same time.”   “It was good because I could be creative. I got ideas to do good things.” “I like doing the things from YouTube.  I think they should ask us to show our film there.”

12 QUOTES FROM TEACHERS “My students have been interested and, in fact, quite inspired by the project. It is all new to them.” Helen White, Kingsmead School, Derby “This is a mind-opening programme which allows our students to learn deeply about the online world around them, the opportunities offered through it, and the potential traps to fall down.” Chris Baldwin, William Allitt School, South Derbyshire

13 Schools and partners Our main challenge has been to recruit the schools to take part in the project! Our success is that we have QUAD, Derby, as a project partner and two educational establishments who are very keen to work on the project. Unexpected … we have made new contacts and are engaging with schools and facilitators who are new to us.
