AP EURO Unit #5 – Nationalism of 19th Century PPT #512 Impact of Imperialism
2
Types of imperialism: Direct Colony Indirect colony
The Sphere-of-Influence Economic Imperialism
3
1. Direct Colony: colony governed by foreign officials
no self-rule was given to natives Need enough men to overpower natives and keep natives in fear End goal is to assimilate colony into an empire as a lesser member Government institutions were based on European governments Example: Belgian King Leopold II practiced a brutal style of direct rule in the Belgian Congo. Almost 10,000,000 Congolese were killed in his entire rule. France practiced direct rule of colonies in Vietnam, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

2. Indirect colony: native upper-class was given limited self-rule over the colony local government of natives remains in place, but under watchful eye from Europeans Small cadre of “advisors” help direct native rulers Appears like natives are still in charge End goal for native leadership was to Westernize future leaders of a colony in order to perpetuate European control Example: British East India Tea Company “Raj” (until the Sepoy Rebellion) After the rebellion was put down, the British Government assumed direct rule over the colony.
5
Benefits to: DIRECT COLONY INDIRECT COLONY More control
Likely more obedience Less instability since you control the military and all aspects of life Fewer Europeans needed Less chance of rebellion
6
3. The Sphere-of-Influence:
foreign power exercises control over another country’s trade and economy Example: Britain divided China into various spheres-of –influence That gave British exclusive trade rights within certain Chinese ports (like Navigation Laws) Europeans would usually maintain rights of (power of) extraterritoriality – all laws broken in China were tried in British courts in Britain
7
4. Economic Imperialism:
a relatively hidden form of rule when a private company controls a less developed country examples include the Dole Fruit Company controlling Hawaii before it became a state, the East India Tea Company’s control of Raj India

What one is best? Jacoblandia is in need of widgets to live more comfortably. They’re an amazing device which taste lovely, prolongs life, and looks beautiful as decorations. Problem: widgets are only found in Widgetlandia. Jacoblandian King Trump needs a plan to obtain control of the Widget market. Widgetlandians know this. They have almost no army, but they have plenty of those blessed widgets. We need them. They have them. They’ve just surrendered their two-row boat navy without a fight. You’re now going to negotiate their fate away, but first, you need to plan your end state. Your group is the newly appointed Department of State. You need to convince King Trump of a plan. Argue that the type of imperialism your group is assigned is better than the others, in to guarantee a steady flow of cheap widgets. Keep costs down; you’ll need widgets for a long time.
