If a relationship is known to be proportional, ratios from the situation are equal. Proportional relationships can be identified in both tables and graphs. In the last lesson, you also used both of these representations to make predictions about proportional situations. Today you will continue to develop strategies for solving proportional situations using an equation.

1-53. MULTIPLE STRATEGIES Kenny’s class found several ways to solve 10 7 = 𝑥 1505 Two of the strategies that they used are presented in the following slides. Work to understand each strategy so that you could use them to solve new problems.

1-53 Cont’d: Giant One Method: Multiplying a ratio by 1 does not change the value of the ratio. You can write 1 in many forms, such as 3 3 and In this course, this kind of fraction is called a “Giant One.” Find a value to use as a numerator and denominator in a Giant One, and then find the value of x in the equation below.

1-56. ANOTHER STRATEGY Cross-Multiplication Method: Juana’s method is shown at right. Juana’s method is really just a shortcut based on the Fraction Busters Method.

Extra Practice 4. 7 ℎ = 8 7 5. 4 3 = 8 𝑥 6. 𝑚 5 = 7 2 7. 7 4 = 𝑟 5
Solve the following using any method: = n 10 = x 3 = x 10 4. 7 ℎ = 8 7 = 8 𝑥 6. 𝑚 5 = 7 2 = 𝑟 5 = 5 𝑥 = 2 5𝑛 = 4 𝑝 𝑘 = 8 2 12. 𝑛 4 = 8 7

Extra Practice 1. Jasmine bought 32 kiwi fruit for $16. How many kiwi can Lisa buy if she has $4? 2. Castel bought four bunches of fennel for $9. How many bunches of fennel can Mofor buy if he has $18? Kiwi = Dollars Kiwi = X Dollars or

3. Jack was planting a tree
3. Jack was planting a tree. He was to dig a hole that was 3 feet deep for every 5 feet of tree height. How deep should he dig the hole for a tree that is 17 feet high? 4. The park ranger stocks the children’s fishing pond keeping a ratio of 4 sunfish to 3 perch. If he puts 300 sunfish into the pond, how many perch should be put into the pond?
