3 Course Description: Prerequisite(s): None
The Grade 9 Academic develops the analytic reading, writing, oral communication and thinking skills needed in the challenging secondary school academic program and in preparation for the diversity of life. Students will study and interpret a variety of challenging texts from contemporary and historical periods, including novels poems, plays and opinion pieces. They will also analyze and create effective media works. An important focus will be the thoughtful use of spoken and written language.

4 Big Ideas: The overall goal for students is to articulate their opinions when speaking and writing with clarity and organization. They need to show an awareness of writing and speaking for various audiences and purposes, which means showing a variety of styles and formats. They need to be able to read, think and react to media and literature by making personal connections and thematic comparisons.

5 Overall Expectations:
To be successful in this course, you MUST be able to demonstrate all of the following skills: Demonstrate the ability to listen in order to understand, use speaking skills and strategies appropriately to communicate with a variety of audiences and to reflect on personal strengths as a listener and public speaker. Demonstrate the ability to read and comprehend a variety of texts while identifying literary devices, text forms and features while implementing strategies before, during and after reading. Develop and organize content to write for an intended audience while making connections in your writing Implement editing and proofreading strategies in order to communicate your understanding Identify media forms by identifying conventions and techniques as well as create a media text for a specific audience using conventions and techniques.

9 Learning Skills: The development of learning skills and work habits is an integral part of your learning. The achievement of these skills is officially reported on the Provincial Report Card. The learning skills on which you are evaluated are Responsibility (completes endeavours on time, manages own behaviour) Organization, (keeps record of materials/notes, manages time and has a plan) Independent Work, (independently monitors progress and uses time in class wisely) Collaboration, (takes on various roles in groups, contributes ideas/info, solves conflicts, responds professionally to opposing points of view, traditions, facts) Initiative, (takes charge of own learning and is curious, has oomph) Self-Regulation. (sets goals, seeks help, perseveres) The scale that is used for this evaluation are E - Excellent, G - Good, S - Satisfactory, and N - Needs Improvement
