significantly reduce or eliminate the
negative impact of development
on the environment and occupants

4. Climate change and the need to reduce GHG emissions, in
particular CO2, is probably the
most important and urgent
issue facing mankind. Because
buildings contribute about 23%
of total emissions they should
be at the frontline of the fight
against global warming.
By 2050, urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa will be home to 800 million more people than in 2014, according to New Climate Economy, and these will all live, work and study in buildings.
Future growth in Africa presents a tremendous opportunity to reinvent the way we build – to benefit the economy, society and enable humanity and nature to thrive together. 

6. THE KENYAN BUILDING INDUSTRY
Kenyan construction industry contributes 7 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP)
With an increase in population, opportunities exist in the construction of residential, commercial and industrial buildings, including prefabricated low-cost housing
in 2017 the US$3bn construction sector contributed 4.8% to the Kenyan economy

7. Important observations include:
• Much of corporate Kenya perceives green activities as part of their growth strategies.
• Other indicators of the increased corporate sustainability trend are more corporate reporting on environmental and sustainability policies, an increase in both voluntary initiatives and the money directed toward socially responsible investments.

8. The building industry is facing a continuing rise in demand for green building materials, product and services.
